In an effort to try and stay busy, I changed my oil

Fortunatly BMW made the job surprisingly easy. I was happy to find the access panel for the oil plug so that I didn’t have to remove the entire underbelly tray. The drain plug is also placed vertically so you don’t need to guess how far off to the side the oil will shoot out. I’ll change my coolant next weekend, and that job does involve removing the underbelly trays, so while I’m at it I’ll replace the transmission and differential fluids.

It’s a BMW, the blinker fluid is a lifetime fluid.

...

...

because it never gets used.

Oil changes are quite nice on BMW’s, unless you have a one of their GS bikes from the early-mid 2000’s. such a PITA just to access the drainplug

Make sure you burp the cooling system accordingly. A lot of people forget to. When doing so, make sute not to over tighten that plastic bleed screw too hard both up high and at the drain.

Is your car due for a diff and trans service?

The process for this on my parent’s Renault. Try to remove undertray bolts gently, realise they’re steel bolts threaded into soft alloy and strip every thread. Heat up a stanley knife and cut the plastic bastard off. Cut out bolts with angle grinder. Change oil. Throw undertray into a skip.

Are you really changing the oil if you don’t play the “how far will it fly” guessing game?

I had an E36, I learned all about burping the coolant. I have it down to a science.

Yeah, it’s due, 40,000 miles.

I'm picturing a big machine that picks the car up and pats it on the roof.
